A $3.3 million settlement was approved by a federal judge following the Western Center on Law and Poverty’s 2012 lawsuit against the Los Angeles Housing Authority’s illegal charge of an average of $24 for trash collection every month since 2008.
Robert Newman, a senior attorney with Western Center, said the average reimbursement to 4,000 current and former residents will be at least $700.
The housing authority will seek a new agency to collect trash for its 14 projects, reimburse current tenants who do not have a reduced rent, and change how they charge for rent overall.Tags: Housing, Housing: Landlord-Tenant
