Program Coordinator – Consumer Justice

Admin/Operations
East Bay Community Law Center
Description

East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is a non-profit legal services organization, the community-based clinical program for U.C. Berkeley Law School, and one of the Bay Area’s largest and most effective systems disrupters. With a dual service and teaching mission, EBCLC is a racial justice organization committed to building a culturally diverse workplace, centered on an internal Equity and Inclusion Roadmap that outlines the organization’s equity priorities. EBCLC is also an organized workplace, having reached its first collective bargaining agreement in July 2021. With about 80 staff, 150 law students a year, and a nearly $10 million annual budget, EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal services in Alameda County, providing multimodal, collaborative, and holistic legal services to over 5,000 clients annually and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the state and local level.

The Consumer Justice Clinic (CJC) supports and empowers our clients in challenging financial systems designed to perpetuate multi-generational racial exclusion from credit, property, and wealth-building tools, and to strip marginalized communities of the assets they have fought to acquire. We are a holistic-oriented team. Issues addressed by CJC include debt collection, credit reporting and access to credit, student loans, car fraud, predatory lending, and consumer scams, particularly those aimed at seniors and immigrant communities. CJC also runs a General Clinic, which provides legal information, education, and advocacy on a wide range of civil legal issues to individuals who cannot find legal assistance elsewhere.

We offer two modes of service: traditional one-to-one assistance reserved for our most vulnerable clients who are not able to self-help, and asynchronous guided self-help for our clients who are able to navigate technology and follow directions. Please review CJC’s website to learn more about our services: consumerjusticeclinic.squarespace.com.
